My Poster fourth draft

I have made some minor changes which I think all but complete my poster. Some text has changed colour and been repositioned. Ill get some last feedback from peers and make final changes then its just shooting the rest of my video and editing it.

My Poster Third draft

Here I have simply changed the positioning of the album cover insert and test and it now works better along with the repositioning of the picture. (Moved to the left so his person fills the left space and the album cover and text the right hand side) This is close to completion now but I think one or two more adjustments are necessary.

My Poster Second draft

The second draft I think is a vast improvement on the first draft. As I had mentioned in the first post of my poster, having a photo might have sent the development backwards but I did mention having an animation of some sort which is what I have done to the photo so it looks more a part of the poster rather than just an add on. However I then thought the positioning of the test and album cover insert was wrong so I am going to change it.

My Poster first draft

Here is the first draft of my poster, It took a long time to get to this point in the design because I found it difficult to get the right layout, after the amount of time spent on it, it doesn't look too bad, I think the fonts and layouts of them are okay, but the background colour needs changing or at least some form of change to the middle as it doesn't look quite done. I took some inspiration from other posters in my research as to where to put some text. Also some posters have the album in the background so I thought instead of a photo or animation of the person (although I may try that as well) I would use the artwork instead. I will try some other things and see what fits.

My album artwork Inside cover Final Draft

As you can see, I have finally sorted the outlining pattern by improving the definition of the lines and darkening the patterns detailing. And like the front and rear covers the titles are indented to look complete. Now I only have my poster to produce and the rest of my filming.

My album artwork Inside cover third draft

I thought the underlining was the last part of the puzzle to making the inside cover but as it turned out, I just needed a final look back at my other parts of the product I've made to finish it off.

My album artwork Inside cover second draft

I thought I'd first address the text issue and also make it bold. I has a better look than the first one but I still need to do something else.

My album artwork Inside cover first draft

The first of my inside covers reflects both the front and rear covers as is the convention within much of my research. Obvious flaws are the different shades of black on the borders which lacks definition also. Additionally, although I liked it at first the text looks just too plain and simple, it lacks the completed look and as I haven't put "IT" on a line below I think I should change it to the same as the other covers.

Further Filming

Weather permitting I hope to continue filming tomorrow. The weather lately has slowed production and further complications like unavailability of both myself and actors has also played a part. I aim to get a further full minutes worth of footage that I can put in my first cut at least.

My album artwork rear cover final

This is the final rear cover, as you can see I decided the place for the text was central. It directs attention of the audience inwards into the centre as does the titles and information on the bottom. Also it looks like the spaces to the sides has been intentionally un-used otherwise the overall look of the cover would be ruined. Lastly I have indented the writing in a similar way to that of the front cover which will be repeated in the inside cover as well. This cover ties in much better with the front meaning I can now move on. I will next work on the inside cover.

My album artwork rear cover fourth draft

I've changed where the text is from left to right and the problem still hasnt be resolved in my opinion. The other additions made are the rest of the copyright information and logos. One more change is neccessary.

My album artwork rear cover third draft

So as you can see I've made a few obvious changes, first of which is getting rid of the photo but it has instantly created a problem, now the cover looks unintentionally bland. Even though I've changed positioning of the titles and the text slightly it just looks like it's missing something. I've even started adding more preffesional looking things like barcodes but even there it looks like it's lacking something so I'll do some more research into it and hopefully complete it within another two drafts.

My album artwork rear cover second draft

Here I've tried implementing elements of the front cover onto the rear but keep the photo at the same time. Although it looks better, I still think the photo is disrupting the appearance too much and when asked, peers agreed so I am going to get rid of it completley and edit whats left to finish the design.

My album artwork rear cover first draft

This is my first draft of my rear cover. I thought I would try something similar to the covers I'm taking inspiration from and use a photo for the cover, however it hasn't really worked because I had to shrink it down due to its large file size and this has distorted it. Additionally, the different colours in the photo means no clear colour scheme can be defined making the rest of the rear cover difficult to make. I have also ignored other colours within e.g the front cover so if you imagine them together as a complete package it wouldn't look right. So I will continue to edit this.

Decision about footage

After much time and thought, the HD problems I've encountered have restricted what I can produce as a result. As the footage is too big and unreadable for the PC's that everyone is using (software pinnacle Studio v12), I will continue with the rest of my shooting then when complete, use the Mac for editing and once the whole video is complete I will upload it to youtube which reads HD files, then I simply copy the embed code into blogger and then the videos can be viewed. This will also be done for the rough cuts.

Problems with editing

I've filmed the majority of my music video at this point, there is however a small problem. The SLR camera I'm using (as mensioned) has 1080p resolution when filming and currently the school computers do not have the proccessing power to cope with the size of individual files let alone a draft or full version of my video, so therefore I must use my own laptop which does have enough power but currently not excellent editing software so I must either download some or use the MAC at school. However the software on that also has lesser software next to the PC's and there is only one MAC in the media room and other people are filming in HD which means they will need to use it as well limiting my time, So my best option at this point is to download software for my laptop.

Today light times

Today I will start filming, I'm beginning with the car part of the video so I will post the outcomes of the day at a later point. in the meantime I have the daylight times posted and although the weather today is a bit foggy it is irrelevant because I'm only using close ups and medium close ups.

Summary of products so far

So far I've created and developed my CD cover and front cover. As I will soon be commencing my shooting, I will take advantage of the time spent with my actors to take some photos for the rear cover (for which I already have an idea) and the poster. In the meantime I will start the drafts for my poster and inside cover as I have already partly designed the rear cover.

My album artwork front cover fifth draft

This is my last draft. After showing the last one to peers within my class, they agreed I should get rid of the parental guidance logo and just add another pattern to make it as if It was never sold in a shop as people need to be informed of its content, However I may still put that particular logo on the rear cover so its still on there just not on the front.

My Album artwork front cover fifth draft

Then I thought why not just join the borders so I have drawn thick lines and connected them up and I think this makes it look far better. Others in the class also agree on this and say this is far better than the other drafts and seen as I like it and theres' not much more I can do to it I was considering this a final draft. I will also not change the colour even though I said I would because other colours wash out the rest of the design. I have additionally got rid of one of the patterns where the parental guidance logo is because it ruins it.

My album artwork front cover fourth draft

I have decided to go back to an older draft for this cover. As you can see I have gone back to using 3 patterns as one looked just too plain and adding anything else that didnt look similar to the pattern used just ruined it completely. But it still looked unfinished. Then I had an idea!

Tuesday, 1 November 2011

My Album artwork front cover third draft

As I said a small re-adjustment. You'll notice that the border on the pattern has gone and it leaves just the Indian style corner pattern. Additionally, I have got rid of more of the white pixels to make it look better. Next I will try some experiments like colour fading and different colours themselves to see if it has a positive or negative effect on it.

My Album artwork front cover second draft

The first cover

This looks much better now, It doesn't look unfinished but there needs to be some smaller touches to improve its appeal. One of which suggested to me was to improve the edges around the pattern and make the overall pattern smaller. This was because people felt it intruded into the album artwork and this was the forst thing they would see and not the artists name.

My Album artwork front cover first draft

This is the first of my front covers, I'm reflecting the simplicity in the CD cover and the front cover and making a more complex inside cover and rear cover. Making a simple and complex product all in one but it's not obvious because the front cover doesn't say this. However when opened, the cover will reveal more of a story or scene, oppositely the rear cover aims to be more busy for grabbing the eye of the audience. However I may create some simple ones to compare and contrast this idea. I got the idea for this cover from research I've done on other covers and have kept it very simple. However this can be improved in my opinion. It looks too busy even for a simple looking cover.

light times

Here are the light times for the next 7 days, this is relevant because I now know how much time I have each day before it goes dark.

Last Week

Over the past week I was planning to start my filming but complications arose meaning I was unable to start, my actor was unavailable for the weekdays and weekends didnt favour me either due to work and other activities, I now however have a more solid idea of when I will start and it is more likely to be next weekend. What I have done to fill the time is figure out how to use the video function on my camera so I can now shoot in high definition as I've only just had it and I barely knew how to use it. Additionally, I have had the OK on filming the Aston Martin and in whatever location I want so this impacts my video greatly so choosing the right location for this scene will be key in making my video look good. I am also going to post daylight times so I know the amount of time I have in the day before it goes dark.

My CD cover ninth draft

This is my final CD cover. Looking down the list you can see how it has progressed and developed into something far more professional, unique and target approved. I've asked some people in my class to comment on it and any other comments.

Mr Briggs: I've seen CD similar to this in the shops, it looks good, any more similar to the original CD cover however and I'd fear it's copying. However I like its overall style and I think you should reflect this scheme in the other parts of the product

Lee: It's definatley an improvement, the last cover just looked as if it was lacking something but this completes it more than you think. Now I'd just put the other information on that you would find on a conventional CD such as the copyright small print.

Brad: Yes I agree with Lee. The improvement looks much better and even I like it. I also like the grey accent around the outside of the "Eminem" title it just gives that little bit extra.

My CD cover eighth draft

I think this draft is very close to my final CD cover. The dark background colour compliments the rest of the CD's furnishings. In contrast to the others, it looks more professional and I also think it has a more effective and relevant scheme. My class peers also agree and also say it looks better with the darker inner circle which represents the CD's hole.

Thursday, 13 October 2011

My CD cover seventh draft

Copying an older file I looked at its design and realise that the title would still have to be centre point on the CD but instead of bevelling it outwards why not inwards. This I think makes it look more integral and realistic and others agreed. However it was still to plain for me. So I looked back at some other covers I've researched for inspiration and I found that the best looking one had a darker background and lighter features. For now though I have kept the black lines and added the grey background which makes it look much better but I think it could do with being darker and I may start experimenting with colours more.

My CD cover sixth draft

However after this, the same individuals within my class pointed out that the horizontal and vertical lines made it look unfinished and under construction, so I took them off and I think it looks if anything even worse now. I need to go back to my original idea.

My CD cover fifth draft

This was just a test to see how the title would look differently positioned. Although some people said they liked this is said I disliked the idea and the development of the CD cover had gone backwards.

My CD cover fourth draft

Here I have added bevel back on the title to make it stand out slightly more than the other lines a before it looked very "flat". Additionally, people had changed their minds about the position of the title and proffered it below the centre of the disc.

My CD cover third draft

For the third I just moved the title above rather than below. When asked most people said they proffered this cover. So I've got a relatively simple layout which I like as do others. I now need to make individual parts stand out.

My CD cover second draft

The second draft was literally a test to see if my idea worked. I was finding the centre point of the CD using the vertical and horizontal lines running through the CD, and I thought It looked okay coupled with the slight movement of my CD's title.

My CD cover first draft

This is my first draft of my CD cover. I remembered that the CD may or may not bear resemblance to the front cover as I have researched examples with both of these consequences. So I thought I will take similar inspiration from the artwork of Eminem and design a different style CD cover to the album artwork etc. I looked at the font and saw that it looks like it belongs to a simple design and thats when I thought I looked like it has been created through lines. So I simply added different thicknesses of lines to a circle to mimmick the CD and I had my first draft.

What im doing now?

I've just posted my storyboard so now my research and planning is completed, I must move onto the production stages of my products. I am still awaiting a few things to be cleared up. For example, I am just waiting for the OK on some location spots and then I can start filming when my actor has the time, otherwise I will be posting drafts of my products of which I am creating now. (The CD and the poster.) The poster will obviously just be the one image but I will try a few ideas before I settle on a layout and then I can progress towards it's completion. The CD will have four parts. The album artwork, inside cover, CD cover and the rear cover. In the next day or two I will post the first drafts of my CD cover which will them be followed in no particular order by the rest of the product but all will be covered. Additionally, as and when I start shooting which should be within a fortnight I will try to post some footage and maybe even the start to my video.

Storyboard

Here is the basic storyboard for my video. It's showing my rough idea of what I want to be happening in key scenes.

Eminem, Just lose it album work, CD

Admittedly, I thought the CD cover would be extremely similar if not identical to the front cover, as most are including ones I've studied such as the Bruno Mars album. The similarities between the CD and the front cover is the CD cover has the same font on it for the title and the song list which I imagine is on the CD for convenience incase the person who bought it lost the CD packaging. But the only difference is that the CD is in a reflective material.

Monday, 3 October 2011

Eminem, Just lose it album work, Inside Cover

The inside cover is a further reflection of the Album artwork. It shows the opposite perspective of Eminem. He's facing the crowd with his back to us (the audience) and he is holding a gun behind his back, this is a sinister image but compare this with the front, It appears he's just taking a bow like you would do after a show and people are applauding you and taking photos. This promotes to the audience further controversy and that this album may not be what's expected of it. This ties in with the fact that this particular album was considered his most vulgar and outrageous but most argue his second newest album was.

Eminem, Just lose it album artwork (Rear cover)

The album cover (although a different clour scheme) reflects the front cover quite well. It says next to the song list on the picture "Eminem presents ENCORE only night only... sold out". Adding sold out gives the impression of poularity and fame and it means all the tickets have been sold which could be why there are people bunched up at the front or bottom of the album cover. The list on songs font is clear because it is in white against a darker background, so it's simple and it gets the audiences attention even though nothing in particular has been done to make it stand out. Additionally, the font is the same as the Albums title so it remains more proffesionally done. The songs that have more than one artist in have been added in a different colour but in the same font as well as being smaller as its not vital information but it is necessary.

Eminem, Just lose it album artwork (Front Cover)

Now I've decided on my song I thought I may as well analyse the cover to see if I can gain any further inspiration. Above is the front cover from the album "Encore". as you can see the colour scheme is predominantly blue. In the effort not to copy his artwork I won't copy the layout or colour scheme but a further note is that his next album "the Eminem show" to be is the same sort of style cover with a similar animation on the front, although the colour scheme is red its such a similar style. (Below is the artwork)
I'm only going to make one product or album cover but I should take note of the fact that it's very similar to the Encore "album" and that means I can have a similar poster.

The curtains on both covers are slightly repositioned, the "Encore" album artwork looks more like Eminem has just done a performance hence the title "Encore". Whereas in the "Eminem Show" album artwork the curtains look like they are just about to close which could indicate the ending of his career even though it hasnt ended. Additionally, there are people in the foreground facing him like everyone is intersted in him because he's a big superstar at the time. Oppositely on the "Eminem Show", there is no one there other than Eminem showing media interest has moved on and the conventionally ridiculed and contraversial artist remains that we know today.

What I aim to do after this post

I think my research is detailed enough to start moving on to producing drafts of my products. Filming will intervene posts as and when I do it which should be in the next week or so, this is because I am wating for my camera to arrive as I've ordered one for another reason and it has HD capabilties, so I thought I may as well use it to get a fantastic picture quality overall. So I will start on my CD first then move onto my poster and hopefully the first shots of my music video will be posted and maybe even edited so I can post something to show you what I'm aiming for.

Colour scheme feedback

I got some feedback from peers about my colour schemes. Some people thought they would work on a cover but others thought they really didnt suit eachother and "I would need to be more accurate in determining the colours."

Lee: the purple schemes aren't very Eminem like. He had colourful albums yeah but they're red and blue both darker shades as well, purple doesn't look particularly girly but I don think think you could get both products or even one on the purple schemes. Do one with a far darker scheme with either one or no colours in.

Charlotte: I agree with Lee, don't do a really colourful one unless you can design something really outstanding. Stay with simple and visually easy.

Brad: Don't make the colour scheme completely boring, mix one colour with shades of dark colours like black, grey and white.

Colour Schemes

Below are some possible colour schemes I could use for my products, I will try some colourful ones firstly and then I will move onto simple shades of darker colours as much of my research into the covers themselves has led me to believe that this is a better quality in my products concerning my theme. However, many of them feature one or two bright colours which stand out on a dark background so I may need to consider combining both.

Here are some schemes I've created:

I have created these schemes by looking at album covers both in my research and looking at random other hip-hop/rap album covers. This is just to help me get a general overview of what colour schemes match so I can pick my own.

Fonts

I liked this font a lot when I found it, it's not boring but its a more plain font that wont attract more attention than it needs, I think it's a likely candidate for my products.

This font I didn't like as much, I thought it was too graffiti like and chavvy. It also actually looks slightly 80's like so I think this one is better avoided.

This had some negative feedback from classmates (more feedback below), they called it "Gothic" and "emo" like. Additionally, I think it's the sort of font that could attract more attention to itself than maybe what it says. Although I wouldn't rule it out, When I make my products I may at least try to put it on to see what it looks like.

This ones my second favourite. The font name itself has relevance to my theme of song and it (like the first font) is simple and shouldn't attract more attention than other fonts, again even if I decide not to use it I could still try adding it to my product at some point and see the outcome.

This font I feel is similar to the "Loserboi Grunge" font, It may work on one level but on a CD cover it may not, I would have to feature it but a smaller less important role on my poster possibly.

Above are the fonts I have chosen using the Dafont site, I typed in keywords like rap/hip-hop, and after some time I found these, I have also asked for some feeback from people in my class to see what they thought of my choices. This is what they said:

Lee: I like the "hitman" font. It looks far more sinister, cool and adaptable to products. The only other one I would use is the "V-DUB" font because it looks like it has more relevance to your theme and products will therefore be easier to produce.

Leanne: I think the "raslani hip hop" font is too chavvy for the products your going to make, it almost looks 80's and I don't think it would suit anything to be honest. I'd personally agree with Lees' choice.

Brad: The "Loserboi Grunge" font is too Gothic or emo-like to be the right font for your product, A lot of the album covers I see for rap/hip/hop album covers are far cleaner cut, defined and simplistic within reason. This would look too out of place on a cover that should potentially be very simple.

After this feedback it is obvious which one I should pick, the favour is heavily swung for the "Hitman" font and "V-DUB", however I think the "V-DUB" font is too simplistic and the "Hitman" font just has the edge on aesthetics. So that is the one I will use.

Researching fonts and colour schemes

Whilst my filming of my video is in progress and other events/posts are being dealt with I need to start thinking about the construction of my two other products which are my CD cover and poster. So I will research my fonts first then my colour theme, shortly after this I will hopefully have the first stages of my video done.

Actors, actresses, locations and clothing

Actors and actresses are an important role in my video because they need the right body language and clothing. Not only this but I need to get the different locations right including what's in them, for example, I might try to get either a very expensive and exotic car in the background but although I know of one locally to me I will need to owners permission and he/she may not let me anyway.

So for my main actor (Eminem) I have my good friend, Tom Jones.
He's familiar with the song, has the dress sense that is similar to what I'm after and has a few ideas of his own which I can try out and see where it takes us. For the other actors and actresses I'll ask some slightly younger girls and boys if they will do their bit in the video, I'll post their faces as soon as I get the OK from them but for now at least I have my main character sorted out, some clothing and one or two locations.

Just lose it storyboard

This is a full analysis of the video and general storyboard throughout the video, I've analysed it thoroughly and got ideas and learned about how it has been made. I am now far more knowledgeable in what I think will work in my video.

Email to Interscope Records for Permission

Above is my e-mail to the producing company of Eminems' Just lose it song, which is asking them permission for me to use their song. I may not get a reply so at least I sent one and I did also state that I wouldn't use it for profitable purposes so I am in theory within legal rights.
